Plans for the David O. McKay building began in 1952 after an evaluation by the Brigham Young University College of Education concluded that the existing building for the College of Education were no longer meeting the growing needs of the program. Carolyn Rasmus of the College of Physical Education was appointed Assistant to the President in June 1979. She served in this capacity for Presidents Oaks and Holland until May 1984. As Assistant to the President, Dr. Rasmus chaired the committee which oversaw all University committees. Much of the President's correspondence, was addressed by Dr. Rasmus.
